Disabled fighters from both sides meet in Jaffna

by Gamini Bandaranayaka

"We are determined to prevent a resumption of this destructive war," war veteran and disabled soldier Ashoka Dayaratne told the Sunday Observer on Friday as he prepared to take a delegation of disabled military and police personnel to the North for a historic goodwill meeting with disabled LTTE cadres. Mr. Dayaratne, who is president of the Association of Disabled Police and Armed Services Personnel, will lead the group on its journey to Jaffna tomorrow.

In Jaffna, they will hold a historic first goodwill meeting with a group of disabled LTTE cadres as part of the ongoing peace-building activities. Mr. Dayaratne told the Sunday Observer that he hoped to build a common understanding with their LTTE counterparts about the need to prevent war.

He earlier told a news conference that his delegation would be taking a consignment of wheel chairs and artificial limbs to be gifted to the LTTE cadres.
