Women's Open League Indoor Cricket on June 4

by Pelham Juriansz

The Women's Open League indoor cricket tournament for 2002 will commence on June 4 with disposable soft goods limited "Free & Easy", as sponsors.

Seven teams have entered for the tournament so far and a further five are expected to join the fray to make up the usual twelve for the Competition.

The matches will be conducted on a league basis and the tournament will end on June 28 with the grand final which will be telecast live on ITN.

David Nicolle, Sales & Marketing Director of Galadari Hotel, the official hotel for Indoor Cricket, at the press briefing at the hotel said that it is a great day for sports, especially indoor cricket as a ready sponsor in 'Free and Easy' has come forward to boost the game.

Unlike in other sports, where it took a long time for the women to catch up with the men (it took years for outdoor women's cricket to catch on), but in this instance, indoor women's cricket started simultaneously with the men and they have been very successful.

"This shows that the CICA is not a biased organisation and they have a comprehensive plan to improve indoor cricket. In preparation for the World Cup to be held in September, this tournament is held to scout for talent", said Nicolle who added that since ITN have taken on the sponsorship of indoor cricket they will certainly reap the benefits in the future as indoor cricket is of a short duration and will become popular in the years to come. Some of the other advantages of indoor cricket is that there is no age barrier and the pace of the game could be controlled. "Indoor cricket has made great strides forward at the highest level as the men's team beat their English counterparts and the women's team beat a strong Indian contingent.

Last year, Slimline Sports Club beat Colts Sports Club to clinch the title at which 12 teams participated.

This year the champions will receive the "Free & Easy Trophy" and the two teams who play in the grand final will receive certificates.

There will also be gift tokens presented to every participating team by the main sponsors "Free & Easy".

Entry forms can be obtained from the Austasia Indoor Sports Complex at Thalawatugoda or by calling Anoma Tennekoon on 074-308331.
