Malcolm joins 1,000-wicket club at Grace Road

LEICESTER, England, June 1 (Reuters) - Former England fast bowler Devon Malcolm became the fifth current player to take 1,000 first-class career wickets in a county championship match for Leicestershire against Yorkshire on Friday.

The 39-year-old, who played the last of his 40 tests against Australia at The Oval in 1997, reached the landmark when he bowled Vic Craven for 13 at Grace Road.

He had earlier dismissed England all-rounder Craig White and Michael Lumb and ended the day with figures of four for 71.

Yorkshire closed on 296 for eight in their first innings on day one of a four-day game.

Jamaica-born Malcolm has now taken 1,001 wickets in 290 games.

He joins county team mate Phil DeFreitas, England spinner Phil Tufnell, South African paceman Allan Donald and Pakistan all-rounder Wasim Akram as the only current members of the elite 1,000-wicket club.
