U.N. to evacuate staff dependents in Pakistan ISLAMABAD, June 1 (Reuters) - The United Nations is to evacuate dependents of its staff in Pakistan because of the tensions between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India, a U.N. source said on Saturday. "A decision has been taken in New York (U.N. headquarters) to evacuate dependents in Pakistan because of the current tensions," the source in Islamabad told Reuters. It was not immediately known when the evacuation would begin and how many people would be involved, but the source said they could be in the hundreds. A military standoff between India and Pakistan over the disputed Kashmir region has sparked fears of war. Several western countries, including the United States and Britain, have advised their nationals to leave the sub-continent. |
