Israeli tanks, troops surround Bethlehem camp

BETHLEHEM, West Bank, June 1 (Reuters) - Three Israeli tanks and five troop carriers surrounded Deheisheh refugee camp in the West Bank town of Bethlehem early on Saturday, Palestinian security sources said.

Israeli military sources said the operation around the Palestinian-ruled town revered by Christians as the birthplace of Jesus was a fresh "patrol".

The low-level military activity appeared to be a response to an alert of a possible attack or suicide bombing, rather than a fulll-scale raid.

At least three suicide bombers involved in recent attacks have come from Deheisheh, located about 10 km (six miles) south of Jerusalem.

Israeli troops pulled out of Bethlehem on Thursday after occupying parts of the town for three days.

Israel has launched numerous raids on Palestinian cities and made scores of arrests to contain what it calls a resurgence of suicide bomb threats, since it ended on May 10 a six-week West Bank offensive begun after attacks killed dozens of Israelis.

On Friday, Israeli forces pushed into the West Bank cities of Nablus and Tulkarm and detained 100 people in more sweeps for Palestinian militants, overshadowing a new flurry of peace diplomacy to end the 20-month conflict in the region.
