Anthology of Gajaman cartoons at BMICH by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE Fascinated by Gajaman cartoons, Prof. John A Lent of University of Pennsylvania, historian and surveyor on all branches of comic art, nominated Camillus Perera, the "Geppeto" of Gajaman the character, as a member of the advisory board of his "Cartoon Journal", published in USA. "Prof. Lent, the Editor of the Cartoon Journal invited me to contribute to his cartoon journal", Camillus Perera said last week addressing a press conference from "Penthouse" floor of Pramukha Bank in Colombo. Active cartoonist and a press magnate, Perera said this after announcing an exhibition of Gajaman cartoons to be held on June 13, 14 and 15 at the BMICH, Colombo 7. He plans to celebrate the 36th birthday of his overwhelmingly popular cartoon character Gajaman. Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya will be the chief guest at the ceremonial opening of the exhibition on June 13. "All are welcome to "Gajaman 2002". The exhibition is open to the public on June 14 and 15 from 10 am to 8 pm," he said. Gajaman is hailed as being the liveliest of all cartoon characters in the domain of humour or gag cartoons in Sri Lanka since the character's inception in 1972. The strips of Gajaman's cartoons were first published on Sathuta, a Lake House comic art publication. The cartoon continued to appear on Sittara from 1975 until the 80s. Some 120 strips of Gajaman cartoons, which were selected by Camillus and other experts in the field of cartoons will be displayed at the exhibition. "It will be an anthology of my work, selected from the passage of time from 1972 to 2002," Camillus Perera said. Among other cartoon characters created by the artist are Magodisthuma (representing politicians as a whole), a character that appeared on Gajaman cartoons, Thepanis, Dekkoth Pathmawathi and Chuti, Tikka and Pato the parrot, Siribiris the family man (Siribiris continues to appear in the Sunday Observer), Sellan Sena, Mr. Loveris (appeared in the Sunday Observer during the 60s, Don Sethan and Simona, Sweeti, Meraiah, Goddin Aiya and Lapaya. |
