SLRFU looks for foreign coach by LAL GUNESEKERA The search is on for a foreign rugby coach for the Sri Lanka national side. A decision to this regard was taken last week by the Council of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) who have appointed a three-member committee to go into all details. Since SSP Nimal Lewke (now Deputy Commandant of the STF) resigned as national coach, Tony Amith, took over the duties on a match to match basis with Asanga Seneviratne in charge of the national 7s squad. The President of the SLRFU Captain Harsha Mayadunne, told Sunday Observer that the Council felt that a permanent coach must be appointed. In this regard, the SLRFU are "looking out" for a top foreign coach from the southern hemisphere, but if they are unsuccessful in recruiting one, a Sri Lankan will be picked for the post. He said: This all depends`on his (foreign coach) terms and conditions. A Sri Lankan will be his understudy and then take over. Iswan Omar heads the three-member committee which also includes Michael Jayasekera and Rohan Abeykoon, and they have already received two applications from Australia and one from New Zealand. Omar said: "We will go through their applications and hand over our report to the Council. We are doing a professional job in recruiting a foreign coach. We are looking ahead to the 2004 Asiad and development of rugby in this country. The SLRFU Council have also sent five names to form the selection committee to the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Johnston Fernando. They are Group Captain Tikiri Marambe (Chairman), Saman Jayasinghe, Bryan Baptist, Brigadier Jupana Jayawardene and Hemantha Yatawara. |
