Good governance, credible leadership The Management Club (TMC), formed in February under the auspices of the Chartered Management Institute, UK, had its first evening presentation recently when it organised a program on Good Governance and Credible Leadership in Colombo. Dr. Nadim Ul Haq, Senior Resident Representative of the International Monetary Fund in Sri Lanka was the keynote speaker at this event, which was organised by the Management and Social Accountability Committee of the TMC. Dr. Haq indicated that market forces will finally decide on the failure or success of an organisation and that the corporate sector should learn from research and realise that regulations alone cannot eliminate risks. Sujeewa Mudalige, Partner Pricewaterhouse Coopers, presenting the Enron saga, described how a company with a magnitude of more than 3,500 subsidiaries and picked by the Fortune magazine as the most innovative company for six consecutive years, collapsed as a result of bad accounting policies. The panel discussion which followed the presentations was moderated by former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ranel Wijesinghe with the participation of Arith Wickremanayake, Attorney-at-Law and Partner of Nithya Partners and Chandra Jayaratne, Chairman Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. TMC would have the next evening presentation on July 12 at the Galle Face Hotel on 'Changing the Mindset of an Organisation to become World Class in their Industry'. |
