Kingswood hold Wesley to a 6-all draw by LAL GUNASEKERA Pre-match favourites Wesley failed to live upto expectations and were held to a 6-all draw in their 'first-leg' L. E. Blaze Memorial Trophy schools rugby match against Kingswood at Havelock Park yesterday with all scoring done in the first session. Wesley scored through two penalties while Kingswood had one penalty and a drop goal. Wesley who created a sensation when they beat Trinity for the first time in history failed to make good use of the possession that came their way and also from the mistakes of their opponents. Centre Shakar and full back Badurdeen made some good runs in the second session but failed to penetrate Kingswood's defence. Kingswood on the other hand too had their chances so pulling through but their place kicker Weerakkody missed two simple penalties. One was in injury time which could have brought them victory while the other was in the first session. Wesley's two penalties were put over by Prasad Perera while Weerakkody was responsible for both the penalty and the drop goal for Kingswood. Mahinda Jayawardene refereed. St. Joseph's 7/0 In the first game of the evening St. Joseph's just managed to beat Science College by 7 points (1 goal) to nil after a scoreless first half. Wijesundera scored the winning try for the Josephians in the second session with Pradeep Priyantha making certain of the extra points. Wijesundera was sent into "Sin Bin" in the second session. This game was "blown" by Ranil de Silva as appointed referee Kevin Lappen failed to turn up. |
