Robinson Club changes hands

A majority stake of Robinson Club, now known as Club Bentota, the first purpose-built club hotel in Sri Lanka, was acquired by Mount Lavinia Hotel and Manta Maldives recently.

Manta Maldives is an experienced hotelier and travel agent in Maldives for LTU, Kuoni, Air Tours, Hayes and Jarvis. It has interests in 15 resorts including Hilton Maldives and a small luxury hotel in Seychelles. The shareholders of Manta Maldives are Amy Stierli and Hussein Afeef.

Mr Afeef is the current Vice Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry. Ms Stierli, the founder of Manta Switzerland, is its present Managing Director. Manta Switzerland is the biggest tour operator for the Indian Ocean in Switzerland. It sends over 15,000 guests a year to the above destinations.

Club Bentota is a 150-room property built on 80,000 square metres and a one kilometre long beach. The hotel has built a strong client base over the past 15 years with the former operator, Robinson Club's sister company, TUI Germany. It is the world's largest tour operator which has helped give the hotel an international profile.

Chairman Mount Lavinia Hotel Sanath Ukwatte said: "We focus on niche market products and the new project fits very well into our profile. It is our first outside project and we are excited about the potential of Club Bentota." The management rights have been given to Mount Lavinia hotel.

The partnership with Manta Maldives will help enhance the profile of the hotel, he added. The directors are Sanath Ukwatte (Managing Director), I. Ukwatte, Bazeer Cassim, J. Gunaratne, H.Afeef, Shuaib Shah and Samson C. de Silva. Amy Stierli and M. Nazeer are to be appointed to the board.
