World Press Photo 2002 exhibition in Colombo

Each year, an independent international jury, consisting of nine members, judges the entries (in nine different categories), submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all corners of the world. This year's competition attracted 4,171 photographers from 123 countries. More than half (55.7%) of the images was entered in digitized format (in 2001, 27.5%).

Daily life stories

The annual exhibition is shown each year at about 70 venues in 35 countries all over the world, subject to the condition that all prizewinning entries are exhibited without any form of censorship. This year's exhibition contains nearly 200 photographs. The exhibition does not only show the best in press photography in the past year it can also be seen as a historical document containing the world's main events of 2001. The fact that hundreds of thousands of visitors around the globe will view this exhibition bears out the power of the photograph to transcend cultural and linguistic frontiers.

The World Press Photo Foundation is an independent platform for international press photography, founded in 1955. This platform manifests itself in the annual World Press Photo of the Year Contest and the corresponding yearbook and exhibition.

World Press Photo aims to increase public interest in press photography and to promote the free flow of information worldwide. World Press Photo also stimulates discussion about aspects of photojournalism among those who are professionally involved in it. This takes the form of initiating and organising the annual Joop Swart Masterclass and seminars and debates in different countries. The World Press Photo Foundation is worldwide sponsored by Cannon, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Kodak Professional, a division of Eastman Kodak Company.

From August 2nd - 21st World Press Photo Exhibition can be seen in at The Barefoot Gallery, 704, Galle Road, Kollupitiya in Colombo.

This travelling exhibition, unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography and is brought to Colombo with the support of the Royal Netherlands Embassy & Millennium Information Technologies.
