Trinity whipped again and Royal take 'Bradby'

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent

Royal College playing with tremendous power whipped Trinity College by 44 points (2 goals, 6 tries) to nil to take the second leg of the 58th Bradby Shield sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Limited and played before a record crowd at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. At lemons Royal led 15-0.

Royal College won the first leg in Colombo 39-0 and their aggregate of 73-0 in the series beating the earlier record score of 61-6 they recorded in 1976 under Manik Weerakumar. Their score of 44-0 inflicted their bigger ever defeat on the Trinitians.

Before the commencement of the match both teams were introduced to the chief guest Noel Brohier, Trinity's captain of 1962 and Rugby Lion.

Trinity once again put up a pathetic display and allowed the Royalists to dictate terms. Trinity's defence was always suspect and Royal's forwards took full advantage of this for the backs to take over and score almost at will. Royal played cohesive rugby and their forwards combined well with the back division to deal blow after blow on Trinity and the later never recovered from them. Trinity altogether did not play badly their forwards led by skipper Sajeewa Mendis, No. 8 Migara Maddumapatabendi, prop Mohamed Naushan and lock Dushan de Silva put flashes of brilliance but lacked the support from the back division.

Royal's forwards led by No. 8 Dushan Leuke harassed the Trinity defence and skipper and scrum half Zulki Hameed proved to be a thorn in the flesh of the lions. When it came to the back division centre Rajith Jayasundera were superb and he made some daring runs which flustered the Trinity defence which had no answer.

Trinity started off well and played well in the first five minutes during which they were awarded two penalties but it did not bear any fruit for them.

It was after that the Royalists came back pounding into the game. Inspired by their think tank and No. 8 Dushan Leuke who took possession off a ruck and sent a pass to flanker Kushan Athukorale who in turn gave it to centre Rajith Jayasundera who scored mid right with a fire run. Full back Chamath Danawansa failed to add the extra points. Royal 5-0.

In the 19th minute Royal scored their second try when Nanda Abeysekera won the ball from a line out and the ball changed hands through Shamil Mohamed and scrum half and skipper Zulki Hamid who slipped through to score mid left and fullback Chamath Danawansa who earlier missed a penalty failed to add the extra points. Royal led 10-0.

In the 25th minute Royal forged ahead further when they won a scrum deep inside Trinity territory and prop Shamil Mohamed made the break to send skipper and scrum half Zulki Hameed to score far right. Danawansa failed with the conversion. Royal 15-0.

Trinity had the writing on the wall now and they were now intent on restricting the Royalists. They dropped the number of players in the line outs to five to provide extra defence.

After resumption, Royal's scoring once again went into action. A kicked was not clearly collected by a Trinity defender and prop Rajith Jayakody pounced on the ball and scored far right. Danawansa failed to add the extra points. Royal 20-0.

In the 10th minute No. 8 Dushan Leuke combined well with centre Rajith Jayawardene before touching down almost in front of the post. Danawansa once again failed to add the extra point. Royal 25-0.

At this stage Trinity started to wilt and it was some individual play which stopped the Royalists from running up a bigger score.

In the 15th minute a penalty was awarded to Royal and skipper Zulki Hameed taking a short lap sent drop Shamil Mohamed to score mid-right Danawansa kicked correctly for the first time. Royal 32-0.

In the 26th minute fullback Chamal Dananawansa started a move in his own 22 and converted a good 30 metres drawing the defence away and sent a pass to centre Rajith Jayasundera who breezed his way to score by the right corner flag. Danawansa failed to add the extra points. Royal 37-0.

Then in the final minutes of play Royal nailed the last nail on Trinity coffin when they won a line out and the forwards moved the ball and shipper Zulki Hameed touched down near the posts. Danawansa added the extra points.

Dilroy Fernando refereed.

Among those who witnessed the match were Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Rauff Hakeem both old Royalists. An elated Ravi Karunanayake said Royalists played well and they richly deserve this big victory. An overjoyed Rauff Hakeem said that he is happy with this great win by his old school.
