Over 200 competitors at inaugural Pannala races today Sri Lanka's first purpose-built motor racing track at Pannala will be Baptised today, when over 200 of Sri Lanka's top racing drivers and riders will compete for the first time at the Pannala International Circuit. The races at Pannala will establish at least two major 'firsts' for motor racing in Sri Lanka according to Chief Executive officer of Speed Development Lanka (Pvt) Limited Pradeep Moraes. It will be the first race on a purpose built in international-standard circuit in this country and will be the first occasion that competitors are required to obtain circuit licences. The official practices were held yesterday and 15 of the fastest entrants will race today. This historic race is organised by four clubs - Ceylon racing Club, Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association (SLRRA) and Army Motor Sports Committee and the Negombo Motor Sports Club. "This promises to be one of the most exciting and challenging races ever to be witnessed in Sri Lanka," noted Pradeep Moraes, cautioning that the pannala International Circuit is a demanding track which calls for skill as power alone is inadequate to come on top." The pannala international Circuit is a two kilometre, bitumen surfaced track comprising eight corners and three straights. Its average speed had been clocked at 130 to 140 kilometres per hour. It is the only custom-built racing track that is currently available in the whole of South Asia. The project represents Sri Lanka's first serious step to becoming the regional hub for motor sports. The opening of this track will help Sri Lanka to host regional events, as well as serve to expand Sri Lanka's tourist market to new horizons. |
