Nine qualify for Asian Age Group Swimming C'ships in China by LESLIE FERNANDO Harini Jayasekera of Visakha Vidyalaya and Chanaka Wickremasinghe of Royal, both national divers, did well to take the top spot in the women's and men's one-metre springboard diving at Diving Championships conducted by NAASU and held at the Royal College pool last Sunday. It was the final trial to pick the divers for the Asian Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships to be held in City of Zuhau, China from August 21 to 25. Though Harini and Chanaka won the one-metre springboard diving event for women and men respectively, only Harini reached the standard points set up by NAASU. Harini collected 291.02 points to reach the qualifying points of 270.12. But Chanaka had 330.07 points, the qualifying points for men were 375.24 points. There are 9 competitors who have reached the qualifying standard. Besides the girl diver, there are 8 swimmers. Meanwhile eight swimmers' names and one diver's names (all reached the qualifying standard set by NAASU) - Raghvan Madawala of S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia - (event 50 metres breaststroke - time recorded - 32.49 secs - qualifying time - 32.55 secs), Kalyan Veera of St. Thomas' College, Kotte 100 metres backstroke - 1.16.01 secs and 1.17.01 secs, Sampath Weerakoddy of Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda - 1500 metres freestyle - 17.21.32 secs and 18.17.29 secs. Dharshaka Tennakoon of Ananda College - 200 metres backstroke - 2.27.48 secs and 2.29.53 secs, Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent - 50 metres freestyle - 29.61 secs and 30.35 secs, Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College - 50 metres freestyle - 30.58 secs and 30.63 sec, Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus - 400 metres individual medley - 6.2.82 secs and 6.16.11 secs, Mihiri Kandanarachchi of Mahamaya College, Kandy - 400 metres individual medley - 6.4.29 secs and 6.16.11 secs. (times given first are the timings recorded by the swimmers and the second set of timings are the qualifying timings). The names have been sent to the NAASU Selection Committee - Brig. B. Munasinghe, Group Captain SLAF, Harsha Karannagoda, DIG Michael Attygala, Azeem Azain and Dr. Lalindra Gunaratne for approval. Once approval is obtained, the names will be forwarded to the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando for the final 'okay.' All competitors selected for this tour will have to bear all expenses (as in the past), air fare, accommodation, food and all other expenses. |
