Rajans beat Antonians 25/17

by KANDY SPORTS CORR

Dharmaraja College, Kandy, playing fast open rugby scored a stunning 25 points (2 goals, 1 try, 2 penalties) to 17 (2 goals, 1 penalty) win over the more fancied St. Anthony's College in their schools under-19 'A' division rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium. At half-time the scores stood level at 3-all.

After a fairly evenly contested first half, the Rajans cut loose early in the second through tries by skipper and flanker Indika Udayakumara and full back Dhanushka Waduge who formed the overlap and scored by the left corner flag. Dhanushka Waduge goalled both tries and the penalty earlier for the Rajans to take up a commanding 17-3 lead.

But the Antonians fought back to even the exchanges through two quick tries by centre Pradeep Liyanage which was converted by fly half Saheer Reyal and another through burly No. 8 Eranga Swarnatillake and full back Samal Wijesiri added the extra points and also converted the penalty in the first half.

But the Rajans hit back through some power play and it was once again flanker and skipper Indika Udayakumara who made a breezy forty metre run and was brought down a couple of metres from the line by two defenders but he picked himself up to plant a brilliant try which went unconverted.

Then in the dying stges of the game Dhanushka Waduge rounded off a brilliant performance to fire across a penalty to bring his personal tally in the match to 15 points.

The match got off to a late start around 5.30 p.m. as the referee was held in the Day Perahera traffic jam.

Anil Jayasinghe refereed.

Antonians won the junior game 13-12.
