Sugath Tillekeratne qualifies for 400 semi-finals today by LAL GUNESEKERA in Manchester MANCHESTER, July 27 - Sri Lanka's Damayanthi Darsha failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the women's 400 metres at the 17th Commonwealth Games here today. Running in the first heat of round 2 in the 400 metres, Darsha finished last out of the eight runners with a time of 53.91 seconds - Sandie Richards of Jamaica won this heat with a time of 51.91 seconds, while Catherine Murphy of Wales was second in 52.15 seconds and Mirelle Nguimgo of the Cameroons was third in 52.50 seconds. Sri Lanka's Sugath Tillekeratne qualified to run in the semi-finals of the men's 400 metres scheduled for 1.04 a.m. Sri Lanka time on Sunday when he finished third in the heat 4 of round two with a time of 46.48 seconds. This heat was won by Granada's Alleyne Francique in 45.93 seconds. However, Rohan Pradeep Kumara failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the same event running in heat No. 1, he ended up sixth out of seven runners with a time of 47.14 seconds. This heat was won by Eric Milazar of Mauritius in 46.02 seconds. Saman Tillekeratne was scheduled to play his second-round of the men's singles in squash later this evening. Navin Samarasinghe lost in the first round to Australia's C. Simpson 3-0 (9-6, 9-3, 9-1). |
