Anusha and Thamara establish Sri Lanka records by LESLIE FERNANDO Two women athletes - Anusha Ekeligoda nee Kariyawasam of Lanka Lions in the triple jump and Thamara Dissanayake of Ace AC in the Heptathlon were the first to establish two Sri Lanka records at the newly-laid Rettokan track on the penultimate day of the 4-day 80th National Athletic Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Anusha erased off her own record in the triple jump with a fine leap of 13.00 metres to erase off last year's record of 12.94 metres. The new record jump was in the third attempt. A. A. D. Dinesha of Sri Lanka Air Force took the silver 12.48 metres and the bronze went to D. K. Hemachandra of Sri Lanka Navy 12.00 metres. Thamara Dissanayake, a former outstanding athlete of Seevali MV Ratnapura established the second new Sri Lanka record in the Heptathlon event held for the second year. She collected 4052 points amongst nine competitors. Thamara's achievements in the seven events - first in 100 metres hurdles 15.8 secs, 200 metres 26.08 secs, long jump 5.89 metres, second in shot putt 8.79 metres, third in high jump 1.52 metres and placed seventh in the javelin throw 18.45 metres and 800 metres 2.58.20 secs. G. S. Mangalika de Silva of Sri Lanka Army was last year's champion with 2849 points. D. C. A. Dahanayake of Sri Lanka Air Force took the second place with 3446 points and V. A. V. Welpahala of Sri Lanka Navy third with 3421 points. Both Dahanayake and Welpahala also bettered the existing record. Today is the final day of the four-day meet which will serve as the final trial to pick the 105-member Sri Lanka team for next month's Asian Athletic Championships at the same venue. Today 13 finals will be worked off, starting at 9 a.m. Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando will be the chief guest. |
