Indian IT guru in Sri Lanka

Indian IT guru, Chairman Infosys Technologies Ltd. N.R. Narayana Murthy, who is widely known as Asia's Bill Gates, will visit Sri Lanka on the invitation of Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama.

Minister Bogollagama said Mr Murthy will be visiting 'Yuga Dekma', the mega industrial exhibition to be held in Trincomalee from August 16-20. "He is visiting Sri Lanka to promote the software industry in the country," the Minister said.

Mr Murthy, a special guest at the exhibition, is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. During the Prime Minister's visit to India, he had met Murthy and invited him to Sri Lanka to share his experience and knowledge to help the island aim for similar success in the IT sector.

The exhibition will have over 400 local and foreign companies displaying a wide range of products and services, latest technology and business and investment opportunities in the North and East as well as the rest of the country.

Established in 1981, Infosys is a world leader in consulting and information technology services and partners with global 2000 companies to provide business consulting, systems integration, application development and product engineering services. It presently employs 10,000 people in over 30 offices worldwide.

Mr Murthy has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Infosys since 1981, when he founded the company with six software professionals. He also served as Managing Director of Infosys until February 1999. While at Infosys, from 1992 to 1994, he served as the President of NASSCOM. He has also been a member of the National Information Technology Task Force of India and a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry. He is a Director of the Board of the Reserve Bank of India. \

He has received several honours and awards, including Businessman of the Year 1999 from Business India and has been featured in Asiaweek's Power 50, a list of Asia's most powerful people. He is a Fellow of the All India Management Association and the Computer Society of India. He received a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mysore and a Masters Degree in Technology from IIT Kanpur.
