Jana Handa Peramuna hails minister's move The Jana Handa Peramuna (Peoples' Voice Front) has hailed the modus operandi of the Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku to distribute uniform clothes free to the needy students. Jana Handa Peramuna President A.B.C. de Silva issuing a statement to the media said that in the past the free distribution of clothes to school uniform was given to every child for political gains. "It was a political propaganda. They did not take the trouble to see whether all school going children deserve free clothes. We are in deep economic crisis and we cannot afford to continue with this project the way it was done. Hence we welcome the present set up initiated by the Minister". While welcoming the new system we find that making the parents to hang around the offices of the provincial secretariats to get the documents signed to get the permits causing unnecessary headaches. What the Ministry should have done was to take steps to distribute clothes at the schools without having the parents or children to go to the provincial secretariats, the statement said. The statement also points out that in the past, his organisation had referred to the free distribution of clothes to the Ministers of Education seeking a change. We have no gold mines or crude oil resources and the question is whether our country being very poor, could afford to continue with this type of program as a social service. "The vision of the present Education Minister in this aspect is to be appreciated. It is only the school going children of poverty stricken families who deserve the assistance, and nobody has the right to oppose this move", the statement added. |
