Sri Lanka in Morocco Cup 2002

by SRIAN OBEYSEKERE

North Africa will be the latest zone for cricket with the final touches being put to the multi-million dollar stadium in Morocco which will host the $250,000 worth triangular one-day tournament - the Morocco Cup 2002 competed by Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa from August 12 to 21.

It is understood that the picturesque location near hill terrain in Tangiers will house a modern four storeyed pavilion undertaken by the Federation Royale Marocaine de Cricket (FRMC). The playing area consists of 5 wickets sown with a mixture of 3 different kinds of grass. Sources said that South Africa had welcomed the arrival of cricket in North Africa as an important milestone in globalising the game. Full strength teams from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa are expected to compete in what is expected to be a massive spectator attraction in that region.

The itinerary is as follows:

12th August (Mon) - Pakistan vs South Africa

14th August (Wed) - Sri Lanka vs Pakistan

15th August (Thu) - Sri Lanka vs South Africa

17th August (Sat) - Sri Lanka vs Pakistan

18th August (Sun) - Pakistan vs South Africa

19th August (Mon) - Sri Lanka vs South Africa

21st August (Wed) - Final.
