Service and school bands will provide top quality music at Asian Athletics opening ceremony by LESLIE FERNANDO The stage is set for the big sporting extravaganza - 14th Asian Athletic Championships with athletes from 37 countries vying for championship honours from August 8 to 12 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The Amateur Athletic Association have finalised all arrangements for the big event. The rehearsal of the opening ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Sugathadasa Stadium according to Rohan Karunaratne of the Education Ministry who is the co-ordinator for the musical display for the opening ceremony, said that 5,500 schoolchildren will beat on show various displays. The opening ceremony on August 8 around 6 p.m. will be a colourful one with the bands of three services - Army, Navy, Air Force together with the Police band entertaining the large gathering. Twelve school bands - D. S. Senanayake, Royal, Nalanda, Isipatana, Thurstan, St. Peter's, Visakha, Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV, Devi Balika, St. Paul's Milagiriya, St. Bridget's Convent and St. Lawrence College Wellawatte will be in attendance in addition to the service bands. Rangayathanya Dancing Academy (Kulasiri Budawatte), 1400 pupils perform the welcome dance. Chamara Kalayathanaya (Rajini Selvanayagam) and schoolchildren will give two displays on Sri Lanka Economic Development. Meanwhile over 1,500 schoolchildren will give gymnastic and physical activities display - be another highlight. There will also be drum display by 250 drummers. Kuwait athletes and officials were the first to arrive for this big event on August 1. There were two officials from Saudi Arabia. The other teams are expected to arrive tomorrow (Monday). Maurice Nicholas, the Secretary of the Asian Amateur Athletic Federation will be here today (Sunday) and he will be of great help to the 14th Asian Athletic Championships Organising Committee headed by the AAA boss Sunil Jayaweera. The Asian Amateur Athletic Federation Congress will be held on August 8 at 10.00 a.m. at Galadari Meridien Hotel. It's just 4 days to go for the 37-nation Asian Athletic Championships. The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) Print Media sponsor and Dialog GSM (Sri Lanka team sponsor and official web hoster) are two of the six Gold sponsors of the event. |
