CR beat Army 30/14

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

CR & FC pulled all stops to register a convincing 30 points(2 goals, 2 tries, and 2 penalties) to 14(2 goals)win over Army in their Caltex "A" division rugby encounter at Army Grounds, Galle Face yesterday.

CR opened scoring in the 15th minute through a try by Hamesh Gunaratne to give them a 5 nil lead.

Not to be outdone, the Soldiers hit back in the 25th minute to take the lead through a try by Mohamed Naushad converted by Waduge to give them a slender 7-5 lead.

CR came back strongly once again through the efforts of skipper Asanga Rodrigo who touched down to lead 12-5. Another try by Shantha Rohana put them further ahead 17-5 at the short whistle.

After the turnaround a penalty by Zulfikar Halimdeen seemed to swing totally CR's way when they got a seemingly unassailable lead 20-7. A fourth try by Nishantha Ekanayake, converted by Zulfikar made the scoreline 27-7 in favour of the 'Red shirts'. Another penalty by Zulfikar seemed to seal the game for CR, but a consolation try by Naufer Rahim converted by Waduge gave Army a slender chance of pulling something out of the bag by making it 30-14, but it was yet another case of too little too late and CR won easily in the end by 30 points to 14.
