Navy win 20/9

by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent

Kandy Youths Sports Club's chances of lifting the Caltex League title was dashed away by Navy Sports Club when Navy recovered to beat Kandy Youths by 20 points (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 penalty) to 9 (3 penalties) in their inter-club rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half it was the losers Kandy Youths who led 9-8.

Navy's prop Pradeep Kaluarachchi had an outstanding game playing a big role in two of the tries the Sailors scored.

In the first half Navy put over a penalty and later flanker Denzil Fernando scored a try after Kaluarachchi had set the pace and this went unconverted. Rohan Gunapala earlier put over a penalty.

Kandy Youths replied through three penalties fired by fly half Udaya Hettiarachchi.

But after the turn around the Navy team played better rugby to scuttle the Kandy Youths when they scored twice first off a three-quarter move by winger H.U.B. Fernando which was converted by fullback Rohan gunapala.

Then mid-way in the second half Navy taking a short tap powered their way to score through hooker A.S.P. Kumara.
