Visa-free entry to SAARC visitors welcomed The Business Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Government decision to allow visa-free entry to Sri Lanka to visitors from the SAARC region. "This is a noteworthy development that would augur well for inter-nation trade within the region, which would in turn have a salutary effect on development of tourism and trade in Sri Lanka," J.C. Savanadasa, the Chamber's Secretary General said in a news release. "The Chamber has been stressing the importance of visa-free travel within the SAARC region for some time. Although the security aspect was a matter for concern, in view of the recent developments in the country, the prospects are bright for permanent and lasting peace. The Government decision will be a major fillip to those who travel here from the region," the release said. The Chamber further said that apart from its impact on business, trade and tourism, it will also benefit people who have family ties with India. It has expressed hope that this move will be reciprocated by other countries in the region. The Chamber has lauded the move as a step towards the establishment of a free trade area within the region which the SAARC nations have discussed for years. "This perhaps will mark the beginning of that significant goal," the release said. |
