Lankan swimmers record improved timings but fail to win medals by LESLIE FERNANDO Eight Sri Lanka swimmers (four boys and four girls) failed to win any medals but improved on their timings in the respective events at the prestigious Asian Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships held in the Zhuhai City of China from August 22 to 26. The championship meet was hosted and conducted by the Chinese Swimming Federation with the blessings of the Asian Amateur Swimming Federation. Kalyan Veera of St. Thomas College, Kotte six and won two Diplomas in the boys under-16 50 metres breast stroke - 33.23 secs and 100 metres breast stroke - 1.13.43 secs. Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College, swimming in the girls under-16, collected a Diploma, coming in sixth position in the 50 metres free style - 29.88 secs. Meanwhile Mihiri Kandanarachchi of Mahamaya College, Kandy was placed sixth in the girls under-16 200 metres breast stroke - 3.15.39 secs. She also obtained a Diploma. Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent in the girls under-17, reached the final of the 100 metres free style and also Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus College swam in the final of the 400 metres individual medley girls under 16. Both Menaka and Uma finished in seventh place in the two events. |
