Mahesha and Oshada win girls and boys u-16 singles titles by LAL GUNASEKERA Bottom seed Mahesha Seneviratne and top seed Oshada Wijemanne won the girls and boys under-16 singles titles respectively at the Sri Lanka Junior National Championship of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath yesterday. This is being sponsored by Hanjin Shipping. Mahesha Seneviratne did well to beat the top seed Jancy Paramanathan in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) while Wijemanne after a tough first set, won the second comfortably to win in straight sets (7-5, 6-1). Earlier in the morning, Oshada beat Nishan Rajakaruna in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) while Amrith too coasted to a straight sets (6-2, 6-0) win over N. S. Nishendra in the two semi-finals. Upasamatha Hewakotuge (bottom seed) pulled off a good win over the top seeded Dinesh Khanthan in a three setter (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) to win the boys under-12 singles title. In the two "semis" in the morning, Hewakotuge beat N. Sinnen 6-3, 6-2 while Khanthan beat Indika Wettasinghe 7-6, 6-0. The girls under-12 singles title was won comfortably by the bottom seeded Jithmi Jayawickreme who beat the top seed Hasini Jayatilleke in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). In the two semi-finals worked off in the morning, Jithmi beat Logitha Sylvester 6-0, 6-1 while Hasini beat Angeli de Zoysa 6-0, 6-1. Today the semi-finals of the boys under-18 singles, boys under-14 singles and girls under-14 singles will be worked off at 8.30 a.m. while the finals of the boy's under-18 singles, girls under-18 singles, boys under-14 singles and girls under-14 singles will start at 4.00 p.m. |
