SLRFU President wrong... Kandy players deny agreeing to play at Commonwealth Games At no stage did the six players from Kandy Sports Club make themselves available to play for Sri Lanka at the Rugby 7s of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. The six players (Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, Sajith Mallikaratchi, Nalaka Weerakoddy, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Radhika Hettiaratchi and Chamara Withanage) in a letter subsequent to the article in the Sunday Observer of August 25, deny that they had informed the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) or the selectors that they were available. They state: "We are at a loss to understand how the President of the SLRFU, Captain Harsha Mayadunne, can make such an incorrect and irresponsible statement." The Secretary of the SLRFU, Nalin de Silva, said that the six players had individually written to the SLRFU stating that they were not available for selection "due to personal reasons." The Chairman of the selectors, Tikiri Marambe, said that when the squad was picked on July 6, the six players from Kandy SC were included as they (the selectors) hoped that the players would change their minds and play at the Commonwealth Games. The Sunday Observer apologises for any misunderstanding. Caused as a result of the SLRFU President's statement carried in the Sunday Observer of August 25. (L.G.) |
