India poses strong challenge at Golf Nationals The two defending champions from India Simarjeet Singh (men) Irina Brae (women) will be attempting to retain their titles at the 111th Dulux Sri Lanka Amateur Open Championship of the Sri Lanka Golf Union, which got under way at the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) yesterday. The tournament which is being sponsored by ICI concludes on Saturday October 7 with the 36-hole men's finals, while the 36 hole women's final is scheduled for Friday, October 6. The President of the SLGU, Shiran de Soysa, said that the Nationals was initially planned for October, but due to the Asian Games and the ICC Champions Trophy, the dates had to be changed. He thanked Dulux for their sponsorship for the third consecutive year and hoped that they would continue. He also said that this was the first nationals after the re-furbishment of the RCGC. Both India and Pakistan have strong contingents. The Lankan challenge will be led by Tissa Chandradasa, who is now based in Dubai and ranked No. 1 in the UAE. Anura Rohana, the winner of the Pakistan and Bangladesh Amateur titles too is playing well at the moment and so is Lalith Kumara, Rusi Captain, Alain Gyi, Amrith de Soysa and about 20 other Lankans will also be vying for the title. A notable feature is that about eight juniors (under-18) too are competing. There are about 13 players with handicap of 1 and below. Bangladesh too have named a four-member team. The Marketing manager of ICI, Ms Shermilla Cassim, said that Dulux was pleased to be associated with the Golf Nationals and hope that the tournament will be a grand success. The Captain of RCGC, Lalith Ramanayake, too, thanked the sponsors and hoped that the visiting players will find the conditions at the RCGC satisfactory. There is also a strong challenge from India for the women's title and Sri Lanka will fall back on their experienced duo of Suwaneetha Selvaratnam, and Yvonne Abhayaratne as the youngsters have gone to the USA for higher studies. The Pakistan team includes Taimur Hassan, Shahid Javed Khan, Vagas Ahmed and Tariq Melmood, while India have named Simarjeet Singh, Harindra Gupta, Vikrant Chopra and Gagan Verma. The Bangladeshi team comprises Major Syed Mizanur Rahman, Mohamed Siudkur Ranman, Milon Ahamed and M. D. Resenviea, Sri Lanka's side comprises Tissa Chandradasa, Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara. For the women's nationals, India, have named Irina Brae, Anjali Chopra, Parnita Garewal, Mayali Talway, Divya Kapoor and Shruti Khanna. Yesterday ( Saturday) and today, the events that are being worked off are the Dudley Senanayake Trophy, Levers Trophy and Levers Shield where 110 members from all clubs will compete. Monday and Tuesday will see the team events being worked off for the Paralakamedi Trophy and Zia-ul-Haq Trophy, while the main Amateur Championship begins on Wednesday.
