Uva tea season commence by Elmo Leonard The Uva quality tea season is now in full swing, and teas from this Eastern plantations region, which will come under the hammer at the Colombo tea auction this week, is expected to reach the Rs 500 and over per kilo level. Last week, Uva\Udapussallawa teas sold around Rs 400 to Rs 500 per kilo. In contrast, July's Colombo auction average was Rs 134.55 per kilo. Even, this high average price of over Rs 130 per kilo was due to low grown teas exhibiting high demand during the past few months, manager, Bartleet and Co, Haroon Musafer said. Musafer pointed out that end-August, a parcel of Pekoe from St James Estate Uva fetched a top price of Rs 450 per kilo, and a Broken Orange Pekoe from the same estate obtained a top price of Rs 356 per kilo. This estate is managed by Malwatte Valley Plantations Ltd. In the event of dry weather, which began in earl-July continuing, into September, the seasonal teas would progressively get better, and even reach the Rs 1000 per kilo mark, the Colombo tea trade said. The quality Uva tea season is world renowned, and could be expected only once a year, around end-July to September. At this time of the year, dry weather is experienced in these Eastern plantations. Warm days, cold nights, and desiccating winds blowing through the sculptured hill plantations results in the Uva flavour, which is sought after by buyers, the world over. The Uva quality teas come in the BOP range, being Broken Orange Pekoe, BOPF - Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings and Pekoes. |
