Franklyn Emmanual leads Sri Lanka's Challenge at Junior International Tennis C'ships Sri Lanka's youngest-ever national champion Franklyn Emmanual heads Sri Lanka's challenge at the Sri Lanka Junior (under 18) International Tennis Championship to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from September 9 to 15. This International Tennis Federation (ITF) Group V tournament will be conducted by the SLTA. Emmanual could not play in the recent Junior Nationals due to a sore right forearm, but is now cleared and will make up Sri Lanka's challenge together with Oshada Wijemanne, Amrith Rupasinghe, Harshana Godamanne and N. S. Nishendran to name a few. They face the challenge of 13 boys from overseas including Chinese Taipei, India and Maldive Islands. Taipei with eight players represents the largest overseas challenge with India fielding three and Maldives two. The highest ranked among them is Hsei Wang-Cheng of Chinese Taipei who is 55th in the world junior rankings, and expected to be the top seed in the boys singles. In the girls singles, Jancy Paramanathan is likely to be seeded, but the Sri Lankan girls do not possess any players of any significant ITF ranking. Jancy will face an eight-girl overseas challenge comprising three from Thailand, two from India, two from China and one from Chinese Taipei. Apart from Jancy, the other two challengers from Sri Lanka will be Mahesha Seneviratne and Nawchali de Silva, who both had the satisfaction of beating Jancy at the Junior Nationals. This is the third ITF tournament bestowed upon the SLTA this year after the Futures Championship in February and the Under-14 Junior International in April. (L.G.) |
