Peterite skipper Jehan scores over the ropes at A/L exam The news that master Jehan Jayasuriya, the captain of the 1st XI cricket team of St. Peter's College, had obtained 3As at the Advanced Level Examination was something that made everyone extremely happy. This indeed is a unique achievement because it goes to prove that studies can be combined with sports. Jehan, though actively involved in sports, has never made it an excuse to neglect his studies. He has excelled in his studies right throughout his school career and has always carried away many prizes at the prize-giving every year. He came off with flying colours at the GCE Ordinary Level examination too, by securing 09 (nine) distinctions. The Rector Rev. Fr. Felician Ranjith Perera was jubilant and had this to say, "For me, it's a dream come true. I firmly believe that a sportsman can do well in his studies as well and Jehan has proved it beyond doubt". All his teachers too had many good things to say about this youngster who has always been a very courteous, obedient and intelligent student. Jehan has been playing cricket since his young days. He captained both the under-15 and under-17 division I champion sides. As a 4th year coloursman, he later captained the 1st XI cricket team this season. Under his captaincy, the Peterites won the 50-over encounter against St. Joseph's this year. He toured Pakistan as captain of the Sri Lankan under-17 team for the Asia Cup in 2000. He has also captained the under-15 Colombo District Regional Team and led the under-19 Colombo District Regional Team to victory. Under his captaincy, the Peterites were runners-up both in the 2000-2001 league tournament and the Lemonade Limited Over Knock-out Tournament. He will be receiving the Award for the 'Cricketer of the Year 2002' as he was chosen as the 'Best Captain' of the 'Best Team' at the Bata-Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2002 Contest and also another award for the 'Most Outstanding Player 2001' at the Colours Night 2002 held last month. Despite his excellent academic achievements and good cricketing prowess, Jehan has always been very humble and appreciative of others. His teachers speak well of this all rounder who always greets them politely with his shy smile and respects them as his guides and mentors. When asked about his success at the A/L's, this is what he said... 'It's all because of my teachers'. It is this rare quality of gratitude that has made all who know him rejoice with him. We, at St. Peter's wish him more and more success both in his academic and cricketing careers. Well done Jehan! We are proud of you! May God take good care of you! We also wish the eight others who obtained 3As the best of luck in their careers. Miss Imojen Mel |
