Peace talks: Thera urges lasting solution by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE The Ven. Maduluwave Sobhita Thera, President of the National Sangha Sabha, said that government should push for an honourable and lasting solution for the ethnic conflict at the peace talks with the LTTE scheduled to begin in Thailand this week. The LTTE should be flexible in their approach, and change its stance on its rigid concepts of Eelam, self-governance and territorial ownership. It is equally important for the government to arrive at some sort of consensus with the Opposition over its proposals for a negotiated settlement with the LTTE during the course of talks, should be considered as a vital ingredient. While the peace process is in progress, the government should also concentrate on formulating a fresh Constitution acceptable to all communities with the abolition of the executive presidency. Within the framework of a new constitution the government should focus its attention on demarcating the country for the benefit of the economic development under a unitary state with decentralised administration in those provinces, said the Ven. Sobhita Thera. Reflecting on the present Constitution, the Thera said that it had introduced numerous reforms by way of amendments since its enactment. It was like old tyre with many patches and is best discarded and be replaced with a fresh one for a successful journey ahead, the Thera concluded. |
