Golf Union to revive Junior Open C'ships

The Sri Lanka Junior Open Championship which is being revived by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) after many years is to be worked off on the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) in either December or early January next year (2003).

The President of the SLGU Shiran de Soysa, to the Sunday Observer that SriLankan Airlines has consented to grant six return air tickets to the SLGU for a period of one year from July this year to be utilised by the juniors.

He said: "Amrith de Soysa went to the United Kingdom for the British Junior Open in July on one of these tickets, and we are likely to send two juniors for the All-India Junior (under-18) Open Championship. The dates and venue have not yet been intimated to the SLGU, but we had preliminary discussions when the Indian team was in Colombo for the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship".

Soysa further said that Henk Stevens, the golfing professional, is expected to visit Sri Lanka for the third occasion either in December or January next year (2003) to attend to the juniors as well as the seniors, but the SLGU has not yet received any confirmation about his arrival.

The South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Team and Individual Championship is scheduled to be staged in Sri Lanka next year (2003) where the top amateurs from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan will vie for honours.

"The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB), Paddy Vithana, is keen that we stage it next year, but the SLGU will have to look into the financial aspects of hosting such a tournament involving many golfers and officials from the region", added Shiran de Soysa.

Meanwhile Tissa Chandradasa, Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara have been selected to represent the country at the forthcoming Asian Games to be staged in Busan, South Korea later this month, and the SLGU has informed the National Olympic Committee (NOC) that the golf team managed by Shiran de Soysa would like to leave for Busan on September 28 for practices on the range before the competition gets under way.
