Nilmini completes fine double

Sujeewa Nilmini Jayasena of Sabaragamuwa Province completed a fine double as she won the gold medal in the women's 10,000 metres final on the penultimate day of track and field events at the 28th National Sports Festival continued at the Uyanwatte Stadium in Matara on Friday.

Jayasena who earlier took the women's 5000 metres title put up another pleasing performance clocking 35 minutes 42.30 seconds. She was followed by M. A. Chandrawathie of North Central Province and D. A. Inoka of the Central Province.

The men's 5000 metres title went to Sunil Jayaweera of Uva Province who returned a timing of 14 minutes 56.19 seconds. Asela Bandara and K. Chandradas both from Central Province came second and third respectively.

Pradeep Nishantha of Western Province clinched the men's javelin throw title clearing a distance of 63.95 metres. P. K. Aluvihare of North Western Province who holds the National record as well as the meet record was pushed to the second place while P. K. Ratnayake of Central Province took the bronze medal. M. N. D. Muthunayake of North Western province bagged the women's shot putt with a performance of 12.33 metres. Nandani Wijesundera of Sabaragamuwa Province won the silver and Priyanthi Kusumalatha of Western Province won the bronze medal.

Meanwhile Southern Province clinched the softball cricket tournament defeating Central Province in the final encounter. Central Province scored 89 for 8 from 15 overs and Southern Province reached their target scoring 90 for 3 in 12 overs. In the consolation final Western Province scored 148 for 9 and beat Uva Province who managed only 82 runs. Nuwan Asanka of Southern Province was selected as the most outstanding player of the tournament.

Western Province won the gold medal in the men's table tennis tournament overcoming Central Province 3-2 in the final encounter. In the semifinals Western Province beat North Western Province 3 nil and Central Provinve beat Southern Province 3 nil. In the consolation final Southern Province beat North Western Province 3-1. Central Province clinched the gold medal in the women's table tennis tournament defeating Southern Province 3 nil in the final. In the semifinals Central Province beat Western Province 3 nil and Southern Province had the better of North Western Province 3 nil. In the consolation final Western Province beat North Western Province 3-1. Western Province and North Western Province qualified to play in the men's volleyball final after recording convincing wins in their respective semifinals. North Western Province beat Central Province 3 nil and Western Province beat Southern Province by the same margin. In the consolation final Southern Province defeated Central Province 3-1.

The women's volleyball final too will be between Western Province and North Western Province. In the semifinals Western Province beat Central Province 3 nil and North Western Province outplayed North Central Province 3 nil. In the consolation final North Central Province did well to beat Central Province 3 nil and win the bronze medal.

Meanwhile Western Province emerged overall champions in the men's judo championship with Central Province taking the silver and North Western Province winning the bronze medal. Central Province took the overall title in the women's judo championship with Western Province and Sabaragamuwa Province winning the second and third place respectively.

In the overall medals tally Western Province lead the tally with a total of 50 gold, 30 silver and 32 bronze medals. Southern Province is placed second with 8 gold, 8 silver and 17 bronze medals.
