Name: DJ Dianne Shirley Trendy outfits: I'm not a huge follower of fashion. I do wear designer clothes but I make sure I do not wear what everyone else is wearing. How do you find working at the Blue Elephant: It's good and every one is friendly. The concept is different from England. What's the kind of music you play at the Blue: Lots of American R&B and commercial music. In England I play more new music before it enters the charts. Label companies send me promotional copies,I write to them requesting new music. The clubs in England play Alternative music and 70's 80's and 90's music. There is a revival of the 70's and 80's music - like Abba, Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge, Madonna (Kelly Osbourne's version of Pappa Don't Preach) and Michael Jackson. Fav music: My personal choice is reggae. At the moment Shaggy is popular so is Bob Marley. How much of a party girl are you: Not too much at the moment I work six nights a week. I did party when I was in my early 20's. Now partying is less. How do you reject advances from men when DJing: No problem for me. I tell fibs and get rid of them. Are you superstitious: A little bit. I don't walk under ladders. I don't like killing spiders. When I was in Sri Lanka on an earlier visit I was in Bentota and my friend wanted to kill an insect. A Buddhist, monk prevented us by saying that it maybe someone's grandmother. It stuck. Also at cricket matches whenever England played another country and I went with my friends, England lost. So I guess this time when England plays Sri Lanka I'll go and England will lose! Are you a dreamer by nature: Yes I am. Of a house in the sun. Definitely not in England, maybe in Spain or France. Have you been to Ibiza: I hated it. It's full of English people eating chips. The place is a rip off. Fav DJ: Sasha. He'll mix completely strange music with the dance music, like for instance classical music, which you'll never think of putting together. He performs all over England, in the States and in Europe. If you could change anything about yourself what would it be and why: I'm happy as I am. Touch wood. What other profession would you like to be in: That of a musician. When I was young, I wanted to be a drummer. I have all sorts of drums at home. When I play dance music I play percussion over the music. What makes you happy in life: My family and my friends. You can have everything in the world but nothing to beat a family - my parents, my two sisters, two nieces and nephews. What are the clubs you like: Tropicana Beach is good fun, but my fav club is Dome in Birmingham. It has a good atmosphere and can hold 3000 people. Are you a talking DJ or a segueing DJ: People say I talk too much. At the early part of the evening I talk, let people know what's on and then when the evening progresses it's less talk and more segueing. Your top tip to be a successful DJ: Try and keep the crowd happy. A DJ should assess the crowd and play the music they want to hear. Find a common ground if there are two sets of audiences. |
