Exploring international
relations

Kusal De Silva of D. S. Senanayake College

Once again it was Sri Lanka all the way at the 2002 Future World Leaders Summit held at the Georgetown University in Washington D.C. USA, in mid July. Sri Lanka had the largest foreign delegation with 29 members comprising 17 girls and 12 boys from 7 Public and 5 International Schools. Kusal De Silva of D. S. Senanayake College was elected 'Head of State' for Sri Lanka, with Ruveen Dias of St. Joseph's College as while 'Deputy Head of State'.

The Sri Lankan country presentation choreographed by former delegates Manekha Prematilleka of Ladies College and Thanuji Shanmugeratnam formerly of British School, to the Music of Yanni was the most outstanding followed by the Indian and Honduran country presentations.

This opening ceremony, presented with a video of Sri Lanka as a backdrop gave the country much visibility throughout the week, and was cleverly capitalised by the delegates.

The Future World Leaders Summit brings together over 400 student leaders in the age group 16 to 19, twice a year to explore international relations, develop diplomatic skills and understand the changing world economy. The summit is organised by Presidential Classroom Inc. a non-profit civic education organisation incorporated in 1968 in America.

Participation at the summit gives students credit hours for admission and scholarships to most American Universities. Over 20 Sri Lankan students who have participated in the summit since year 2000 are now studying in American Universities on Scholarships.

Eranjan Kempitiya of Royal College Colombo, was elected by the 430 delegates to speak at the Graduation Banquet on the last day of the summit. This is the 5th consecutive time a Sri Lankan was given this honour. Eranjan is a coloursman in Squash and Captain of his college debating team.

Details of the delegates and Future leaders are available on the official website: www.futureleader.co.uk
