Caltex-Observer Touchdown : Army - Most Popular Rugby Team 2002, soldier T.A. Silva - Most Popular Ruggerite In a surge of votes in the final count, Army Sports Club has made a clean sweep of the Caltex-Observer sponsored rugby popularity contest. In the final count of coupon No. 17 last week, the soldier-club polled 2,859 votes for a total of 5,010 votes to emerge the `Most Popular Rugby Club 2002' for the second consecutive year. They also won it in its inaugural year in 2001. The 'Most Popular Ruggerite 2002' is Army's T.A. Silva who polled 2,289 votes for a total of 3, 203 votes to bounce from third place to emerge the winner. Among the clubs, the second 'Most Popular Rugby club' was CR & FC which polled 268 votes for a total of 2, 082 while in third place was Old Zahirians S.C which had a total of 386 votes while not polling a single vote in the last count. Among the ruggerites, Silva, in the process, upstaged front runner, Chinthaka S. Jayasinghe of CR & FC who polled 258 votes for a total of 1,889 which secured him third place behind Army's Ajith Peiris who polled 1,640 votes for a total of 2,694 to take second place. The winners of this coveted annual event undertaken by the principal sponsor, Caltex in association with the Sunday Observer will be duly informed of the grand awards ceremony lined up by Caltex and the Sunday Observer. |
