Defending champs Sri Lanka gear up for 2nd Asian Youth Netball Tourney

Fifteen players including three standbyes were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the second Asian Youth Netball Championships (Under-21) to be held in Malaysia from October 1 to 8. The Interim Committee of the Netball federation of Sri Lanka conducted the final trial on September 15 and 16 at the Torrington Square outdoor courts.

Twenty five players attended the trial and the 12 players and the 3 standbyes' names have been approved by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando.

The team:

W. Indu Bandara (Ceylinco), Shashika Samarasinghe (HNB), Gishanthi Jayakody (Visakha), Maboja Ranchigoda (HNB), Manojika Priyadarshini (SLPA), Shani Nishansala (Bomiriya National School), Dhammika Malkanthi (SL Air Force), Anjali Lokuliyana (CDNA), Menaka Thalagalarachchi (St. Joseph's, Nugegoda), Thaloja Perera (CDNA), Nilanka Dilusha (Police), Anoma Sanjeewani (Unattached).

Reserves - Nishanthi Rajaratnam (Jaffna DNA), Ashanthi Samarasinghe, (Unattached), Gangani Senanayake (Navy).

Meanwhile Sakunthala Wijetunga who was the coach of the champion Sri Lanka netball team in the inaugural year in 1998 in Calcutta was selected as the coach of the team.

A spokeswoman of the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka said that the manageress and the Assistant manageress for the tour will be picked soon.

N.G. Punchihewa, Secretary Ministry of Youth affairs and Sports said that the matter regarding the payment of the entry fee of US dollars 200 to the organisers can be settled if all members of the Interim Committee of the Netball federation of Sri Lanka make a request the ministry will step forward to make payment.

Twelve Asian teams are expected to participate in the championships to be conducted by the Asian Netball federation. While Malaysian Netball association will host it.

The Sri Lanka team's departure date is not yet known. However, the team began training from Friday September 20 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium Court. (L.F.)
