Sri Lanka Indoor men's and women's cricketers off to New Zealand

Sri Lanka's indoor cricketers will leave on September 25 for New Zealand for the 4th Indoor Cricket World Cup from September 29 to October 6 to be held in Wellington.

Former Josephian Asela Pathirana will captain the men's team with Vanessa de Silva (nee Bowen) leading the women's team. The team will be accompanied by coach Sachitra Siribaddana and manager Thiran Thenabadu, and 20 men and women will participate.

Speaking at the press conference at the Galadari Hotel in connection with the tour, Chitral Amarasiri, Chief Executive Officer of the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association (CICA) said that Caltex Lubricants Lanka Ltd together with the National Carrier, SriLankan Airlines have stepped forward to sponsor indoor cricket.

Caltex has given a commitment to sponsor Indoor Cricket for the next 3 years and the sponsorship will continue till the next World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka in 2004.

On Monday September 30, the women's round will start with the game between India and Sri Lanka at 2 p.m. and the men's round will start with the game between England and India at 1 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the crucial Australia-Sri Lanka encounter will be worked off in the men's section and at 4 p.m. the women's round 1 between New Zealand and South Africa will take place.

At 7 p.m., the women's match between Australia and India and at 8 p.m. the New Zealand -South Africa men's encounter will take place.

On Tuesday October 1 at 12 noon the men's round Sri Lanka-South Africa and Women's round New Zealand vs Sri Lanka will start proceedings for the day. Round 3 at 2.30 p.m. will see Australia take on South Africa and at 3.30.p.m. in the men's section, Australia play India. At 5 p.m. New Zealand vs India and Round 4 at 6.30 p.m. in the women's section Australia play Sri Lanka and at 7.30 p.m. the last match for the day will be between New Zealand and England. Wednesday October 2: Men's round 3 commences at 10 a.m. between New Zealand and Sri Lanka followed by England vs old rivals Australia at 10.30 a.m. In the women's round 2 at 12.30 p.m. Sri Lanka play South Africa, at 3 p.m. in the men's section India play South Africa and in the women's section -Round 5 New Zealand play Australia at 3.30 p.m.

Men's round 4 at 5.30 p.m. see New Zealand battle-it-out with India and in the women's group India vs South Africa at 6.30 p.m.

At 8 p.m., will see the last match for the day between Australia and South Africa in the men's tourney. Friday October 4: Men's round - India vs Sri Lanka, England vs South Africa and Australia vs New Zealand. The 2nd and 3rd place playoffs and 4th and 5th place play offs in the women's section will take place as well.

Saturday October 5: Men's semi-final for 2nd and 3rd place and 1st and 4th place will be worked out and the women's playoffs between winner of game 2 and loser of game 1 and the 1st place vs winner of game 1.

Sunday October 6: Will be the semi-finals and finals in the men's and women's section will take place. The co-sponsors are Austasia Sports Private Ltd, SriLankan Airlines, Lanka Yalta (Pvt) Ltd and Emerald International.

SriLankan Airlines will sponsor the team from here to Singapore.

The Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association(CICA), the pioneers in introducing Indoor Cricket to Sri Lanka has done a marvellous job in developing Indoor Cricket to World standards in a very short time. Having played 4 Tournaments so far consisting of 12 matches the team has only lost to Australia, twice the current world champions. Sri Lanka beat India 6 times England thrice and Australia once.

Sri Lanka will host the World Cup in 2004.

Kishu Gomes, MD, Caltex Lubricants Ltd and Vajira Abeysinghe, Head of Sales & Marketing, Caltex Lubricants spoke on behalf of the sponsors.

"The reason why Caltex sponsored indoor cricket is because we thought that the CICA Committee headed by Romesh Kaluwitharane are a determined set of people and are keen to do big things" said Kishu Gomes. Kishu Gomes is Managing Director, Caltex and Associated with him was Vajira Abeysinghe - Head of Sales and Marketing, Caltex.

The teams for the men's and women's tournament are as follows:

Men's squad: Asela Pathirana (captain), Lyndon Hannibelsz, Chrysantha Peiris, Roshan Weerasinghe, Dilshan Witharana, Sanjeewa Jayaratne, Tharindu Mendis, Iroshan de Silva, Thushendra Zoysa and Chandika Kumara.

Women's squad: Vanessa de Silva (captain), Chamani Seneviratne, Hiroshi Abeysinghe, Hiruka Fernando, Rose Fernando, Gayathri Kariyawasam, Thanuja Ekanayake, Sandamali Dolawatte, Andromida Withanage and Eshani Lokusuriyage.
