Wedding bells ring for former swimming champ Upeksha tomorrow

Wedding bells will ring for former Musaeus College and Colombo International School swimmer Upeksha Silva when she marries former Anandian Dr. Ravi Rajapakse tomorrow (Monday) at the Grand Ballroom of Hilton Hotel.

Upeksha came into the limelight in 1987 when she was the under-10 champion at the Junior Public Schools Swimming Championships and this was the opening for her for a remarkable swimming career. She won at the Junior and Senior Public Schools Meets, Pentathlon Championships, Age Group Swimming Championships, Inter-Club Meets and Junior and Senior National Swimming Championships.

The year 1992 was probably the best year for Upeksha in the pool and after being placed second in the Pentathlon Championships, she established six records at the Age Group Meet, three records at the Inter-Club Meet, six records at the Short Pool Nationals and what really stamped her class was her feat in winning all nine events she participated in at the National Swimming Championships.

She was the shining star of Colombo International School and helped her school to championship honours by contributing 95 points out of the total of 119 obtained by CIS at that meet. She has also participated in many international meets.

Upeksha's prowess did not confine to the pool alone. She was also a champion in the sea and won the 1992 Mount Lavinia two-mile swim and also the Dharmasoka College organised two-mile sea swim in 1992 and 1993.

She gave up swimming at the rather young age of 17 and in 1995 left for England to follow a course in Business Management at the University of London. She now runs her own business.

Upeksha is the daughter of old Anandian Dayananda and Sandya of Ananda Balika fame. Both her father and mother too excelled in sports in their early years.

Her husband-to-be Ravi Rajapakse too is an old Anandian who obtained his doctorate in Russia and has completed his Masters in Gynaecology at King George's College in London. Ravi is the son of Don Simon and Nanda Rajapakse.
