Sachin: 'concentrate, then success will come'

by A. C. DE SILVA

Friday was local sports fans day of getting close to India's and the top batsman in the world - Sachin Tendulkar at the Taj Samudra Hotel. Adidas, the company that Tendulkar promoted in India through their sales and marketing division in Sri Lanka laid out a function to distribute awards in the Adidas cricket promotion drive with little master Sachin Tendulkar as the chief guest.

There were fifteen winners in all in the promotion drive with the Managing Director of Hameedia Fousul Hameed the man behind the scene in Sri Lanka. However, only seven turned up for the awards ceremony and they got their money's worth of exchanging views with Sachin Tendulkar - the Little Master who has been an idol to many cricketers and fans alike in Sri Lanka.

As everyone knows, Sachin Tendulkar is in Sri Lanka right now with the Indian cricket team for the Champions Trophy Mini World Cup cricket tournament and he made a request that he be spared the ordeal of having to answer questions on cricket as such because he wanted to get in some rest and also concentrate on the up-coming match against England today which is a crucial one for both sides.

However, Tendulkar was prepared to talk about his promotion campaign. "I have been a partner in the promotion of the brand name 'Adidas' for about four years and it has been truly a pleasant one", Tendulkar said and added: "Sri Lanka's spectators are very knowledgeable in cricket and I love to play here".

The Indian master batsman said that he was motivated in cricket after India won the World Cup cricket tournament. "I was inspired to play serious cricket from then onwards", and expressed his desire that India's youngsters will benefit with the promotion work done for cricket. I enjoy playing cricket and commercially-wise too. He advised the youngsters: "To play cricket, one has to concentrate and then you are bound to improve".

With Tendulkar being involved in cricket almost the whole year through, does he have the time for anything else? "I try to relax as much as possible and listen to music in the room". Tendulkar was overjoyed at the enthusiasm shown by the fans who were present at the "On Golden Pond" at Taj Samudra. "Thank you for coming for the presentation. Sport is the winner", he said.

Fouzul Hameed - the Managing Director of Hameedia expressed his appreciation of Tendulkar coming for the show in spite of the challenging tasks ahead of him. Mr. Ganesh Subramaniam - Manager Sports Marketing and Public Relations of Adidas, India Marketing Pvt. Limited of New Delhi who specially flew over here to be present for the function, said he was more than thrilled with the audience response to the show. "We are very happy as a partner in promotion, it's truly a great partnership with Sri Lanka's Adidas", Mr. Ganesh Subramaniam said.

There were 15 winners in the promotion drive competition, but the seven winners who were present to receive gifts from Sachin Tendulkar were: S. Sellamuttu, U. Rajesh Vivek, Mrs. Julie Wallace, M. Thirimanne, Chaminda Wellewa, Romesh Savanghan and master Shamil.
