Sun to light up more rural homes

Shell Solar Lanka Ltd., a subsidiary of Shell Gas, has plans to light up 10,000 homes per year starting 2003.

Country Chairman and Managing Director Roberto M. Moran said that 51 per cent of the Sri Lankan population do not get electricity from the national grid. "Therefore, there is potential for solar power in Sri Lanka. It is safe and it is the most efficient source of energy since the country gets sunshine at most times of the year."

He said the company was established in 1999 after Shell purchased the Solar Power and Light Company. To date, the company has supplied 10,500 units and up to September this year, has installed 4,073 units.

The company has set up 16 centres around the country and employs 147 people. Shell works with the Sarvodaya Economic Enterprise Development Scheme, the micro credit arm of Sarvodaya to provide easy financing to rural customers. This project is funded by the World Bank.
