'People Factor' to achieve corporate goals by Ramani Kangaraarachchi "With the dynamic changes currently taking place in the business world, it has become necessary to use the 'People Factor' to achieve corporate goals. Therefore, human resource (HR) practitioners are urgently required to shift from their traditional role of hiring and firing staff, payment of remuneration and disciplinary controls to strategic aspects of managing people," Jayantha Jayaratna, outgoing President of the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) told the IPM annual general meeting held recently. He said that HR should be a strategic partner in the organisational process and HR practitioners need to acquire the required level of professional competence. To fulfil this need, IPM has provided professional study courses and continuous professional development to its membership. He said that over 30 programmes including workshops, public lectures, consultancy assignments, a Young Members Forum, the Suntel Gold Medal, links with other professional organisations, and a Service Provider's Exhibition for the first time were carried out as part of an expansion programme. Receiving international recognition by being elected Vice President of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resources Management, which comprises 14 countries in the Asia Pacific region, was another significant achievement. The first move was also made to establish an IPM centre in Jaffna by V.T. Sivalingam, Attorney-at-Law and an IPM member-based in Jaffna. He will coordinate the activities of the Jaffna branch and conduct professional study programmes, seminars and workshops. He said a solid and strong foundation has been laid by IPM towards becoming a world class professional organisation in pursuit of excellence in the sphere of managing human resources, but more steps need to be taken to reach greater heights. |
