Star studded concert 'Tharaka Geethika' a musical show to celebrate the success of the telecast of 250 episodes of 'Sawanata Gee' will be staged at the Elphinstone theatre on Friday October 4,at 6.30 pm.
The program series hosted by the popular radio and TV personality Srimath Indrajith Liyanage and produced by S.A. Bennett is telecast on TNL weekly and according to the host more than 60 renowned vocalists will be featured at the show-the music played by the 'Super Stars'. The students of the Kulasiri Budawatta, Channa Wijewardena, Chandana Wickramasinghe and Rajini Selvanayagam dancing schools will perform special choreographed items, as well as performances by Rangana Ariyadasa, Anusha Damayanthi and Nilanthi Dias. The chief guests at the evening will be Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku, Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs and the veteran film star Gamini Fonseka. The highlight of the occasion will be the felicitation awards
presentation to 250 personalities all of whom were featured in the program
series over the past five years. 'Tharaka Geethika' is open to the public,
free of charge. Suns of the Sinhalese Take my Word by J.B.Disanayaka Sinhala names, both of people and places, have retained the word 'su:riya' which is derived either from the Sanskrit word 'su:rya' or the Pali word 'suriya' both meaning the sun. Some Sinhalese spell it in English as 'suriya' and others as 'sooriya'. Some place names such as Suriyagoda, (the Land of the Sun), Suriya vaeva, (the Lake of the Sun) and Suriya Kanda (the Mountain of the Sun) also show links with the sun. In the days of the Sinhalese kings, names containing the word 'su:rya' was conferred upon individuals for their exceptional services particularly in the field of military art. Prof. Ralph Pieris, in his 'Sinhalese social organisation: The Kandyan period ' states that it was the custom of the Kandyan kings to confer titles, known in Sinhala as 'patabaendi' names, to those who excelled in military exploits. For example the name Wikramasuriya was in origin a title conferred for military services. It literally meant 'Sun of conquest'. Similarly, Jayasuriya may mean 'Sun of victory' and 'Su:ryasekara' meant 'the Zenith of the Sun'. Says Professor Pieris: "scions of a man honoured with a patabaendi title such as Suryasekara Mudiyanse, would convert it into a patronymic and call themselves Su:riyasekara Mudiyansela:ge, 'descended from Suriyasekara Mudiyanse'. P. 173) Among personal names that contain the word 'sur:riya' today include: Amara-suriya Ba:la-su:riya, Kula-su:riya Lama:badu-su:riya Kalan-suriya,
Kuma:ra-su:riya Manukula-su:riya, Ra:ja-su:riya, Kalan-suriya,
Kuma:ra-su:riya, Samara-su:riya, Sakala-su:riya, Waniga-su:riya,
Wijaya-su:riya, Warna-su:riya, Wimala-su:riya, Wi:ra-su:riya,
Sumana-su:riya. V2 a new duo with an original sound "V2" is the latest duo in the field of music comprising two young enthusiastic musicians Jayantha Ratnayake and Lelum Ratnayake. Jayantha has 15 years experience as keyboardist and his younger brother Lelum, is also a well-known percussionist playing in the bands "Ultimate" and "Salsa".
"I have composed five of my own creations and Lelum has done four
English originals. We are planning to record a cassette and a CD in the
future, Jayantha revealed. The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Co-operation has
invited Jayantha to present his keyboard lessons in the program "3 to
5" on every Fridays. Thaksalawaka Adahorawak Spotlighting schools in action Ceylinco Savings Bank has launched a new TV programme spotlighting Sri Lankan schools as part of its savings programme. The monthly programme Thaksalawaka Adahorawak features a selected school giving viewers an insight in to the school and its activities, as well as a round up of its history, traditions, founding and heritage. While the savings programme focuses on developing the savings habit amongst our youth as a means of building up finances to realise their dreams, the marketing support scheme developed and launched by CSB stands out for giving the students an opportunity to display their talents and the school to educate the public about themselves. The TV programme, in a way, is an advertisement for the school too, according to a company announcement. The first programme will be telecasted on TNL on today at 5.00 p.m. featuring Princes of Wales Moratuwa.
On stage again - the award winning drama Samudradevi stage drama organised by the students of Sri Jayawardenepura Balika Vidyalaya will be staged at Tower Hall Theatre on October 1 at 10.30 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. This drama staged by the school won several awards including the first place in the All Island School Drama festival. The other awards were for the best actress, best actor, best production, best costume designer and Best Make-up Artist. The Principal and teachers of the school hope to give merit awards to
the students who took part in this drama. A Midsummer Night's Dream The twin Mara trees of Ladies' College are an intrinsic part of the fondest memories of anyone who has been part of the school. This October, the English Literary Society links one more memory with these trees. Encouraged by successive directors to embrace a challenge, the actresses and crew pounced on the idea of performing Shakespeare's timeless romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream in the open air, under the twin trees. Performing Shakespeare is a challenge at the best of times, even more so when left without the numerous conveniences of an indoor stage. Enthusiasm often overcomes difficulty though, and neither cast nor crew, nor director have lacked either. Rehearsals for the play began in August, with the beginning of the school holidays, under the direction of Dylan Perera. We can safely say that once again, we have the pleasure of working with a director whose passion for adventurous theatre and good food, equals, if not surpasses, our own! Choir director, Surekha Amarasinghe has once again worked magic with music, and after countless sketches and re-sketches, we have designed costumes we believe capture the mood of the play. The play goes on the boards on October 3, 4 and 5. Tickets are available at the school office. |
