Today is the birth anniversary of the late veteran pianist Miki Menezes. A multi instrumentalist he played saxophone, drums, acoustic bass and clarinet, Miki's contribution - he fronted a dance band - to show biz and the industry, as a whole was tremendous. A music teacher of the famed Menezes School of Music, he trained many a young musician to learn the rudiments of correct playing of music. For his valuable contribution he made over the years to music in Sri Lanka Miki was honoured with the Sunday Observer, Golden Clef Music Hall of Fame in 1992. He once said in an interview that our musicians in the popular music field should learn classical music up to Grade V then they would be familiar with chord structures and improvisations which will help them in their individual artistry. Coincidentally his son guitarist/saxophonist Roger Menezes wrote to us from Sydney giving us the news that his band Stay Tuned played for the Lindsay Girls School Dance which was held in Melbourne recently. Roger who is carrying on the music tradition of his father, says that his band plays regularly for dances, corporate functions including performances for special functions at Sydney's Centre Point. Miki's wife Cynthia, a musician herself will today recall happy memories of Miki the unparalleled musician who was always ready to help a young aspiring musician. |
