Awards

Hollywood has the Oscars, Bollywood its Filmfare Awards, and in Sri Lanka, we have the Sarasaviya Awards. Sought after, significant and a major gauge-stick of performance, perfection and popularity of both films and stars, the Awards Festival honours stars and star makers alike with a range of coveted awards, that add significance to the popularity and professionalism of actors and others involved in the film industry.

A prestigious event, which also sees the creme de la creme of Sri Lankan cinema gathering in one place, the Awards Festival will be held at the BMICH on October 13. The festival will also see six Merit Awards and two Rana Thisara Awards being given for outstanding contributions to the film industry. One of the highlights of the Festival will be the award for the Most Popular Film screened in 2001.

Seven films have been selected for screening at the Special Film Week at Regal Cineman. Selection is on the basis of the income grossed by the films in a period of 60 days. The screening of the films commences on October 4, at 10.30 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. On all days the actors, actresses and the technical staff of the respective films will be present at the 6 p.m. screening.

Rosa Vasanthaya - produced by Soma Edirisinghe and directed by Udaya Warnasooriya has emerged as the most popular film grossing an income of Rs. 20,012,492.84 and will be the first film to be screened on October 4.

Jolly Hello - on October 5 is directed by Srilal Priyadeva and produced by Nimal Weerakkody. The film has grossed an income of Rs. 17,203,270.37.

Kinihiriya Mal - directed by H. D. Premaratne and produced by Soma Edirisinghe will be screened on October 6. The film has grossed an income of Rs. 16,985,480.13.

Hai Baby Hai - will be screened on October 7. The film which has grossed an income of Rs. 11,540,051.45. The film is directed by Sunilsoma Peiris and produced by Sunil T. Fernando.

Pissu Pooso - directed by Sunilsoma Peiris and produced by Sunil T. Fernando the film will be screened on October 8. It has grossed an income of Rs. 7,837,039.51.

Purasanda Kaluwara - will be screened an October 9, the film directed and produced by Prasanna Vithanage. The film has grossed an income of Rs. 7,307,081.96.

Aswesuma - directed by Benet Ratnayake and produced by Samanmali Hewamanna, the film which will be screened on October 10, has grossed an income of Rs. 6,646,501.08.

The most popular Sarasaviya actor and actress contest will be announced soon, and on October 13 the names of the leading lights in cinema will be revealed with pomp and pageantry.

In the competition are 27 films and the jury comprising eminent personalities will be responsible for selecting the winners for the following categories:

Best Actress,
Best Supporting Actor,
Best Supporting Actress,
Best Amateur Actor,
Best Amateur Actress,
Best Script,
Best Music Director,
Best Composer,
Best Singer (Male),
Best Singer (Female),
Best Art Director,
Best Make-up,
Best Sound Editing,
Best Editing,
Best Cameraman.
