Cricket
started 170 years ago!
September is a significant month
for cricket in Sri Lanka. It was on 6 September 1832, that the
first ever cricket match was played in Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was
then known) between a British Army unit, the 97th Regiment and the
'Civilians' (all Englishmen serving in the country, which was then
a Crown Colony), as reported in the 'Colombo Journal'.
This, in fact was the starting point for the formation of the
Colombo Cricket Club (CCC), with its headquarters at Rifle Green
in Slave Island. The Club later shifted to Galle Face from where
it moved to the present picturesque site in Cinnamon Gardens, CCC
thus became the oldest club in the island.
Now, 170 years later, the Mini World Cup with the participation
of all Test playing nations plus two more, is taking place in
Colombo.

Sri Lanka had it easy against Australia and will play India in the final today. Fans are expected in large numbers at the Premadasa Stadium.
