Sri Lanka plays in second div of Rugby Asiad by LAL GUNESEKERA Sri Lanka have been drawn into Pool 'A' of the Division II together with Kazakhastan, Thailand and India for the 18th Asian Rugby Championship (Asiad) to be staged in Bangkok, Thailand from November 16 to 24. The groupings were made in Bangkok on September 19. Singapore, Malaysia and the Arabian Gulf have been drawn, into Pool 'B'. The countries in division I continues to be Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong. The President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Commodore Harsha Mayadunne said, that the Council of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) of which he is a Vice-President, will be taking a final decision at its next meeting whether to promote the division II Pool 'A' winners into the division I for the 19th Asian Championship scheduled for 2004. He further said that the current national pool that was picked for the Asian Games in South Korea will continue to be in training after their return and that there could be additions made and players finding themselves dropped on performance in the Asian Games. The final Sri Lanka contingent for the Asian Championship will be 26 players and four officials. At the 17th Asiad staged in Amori, Japan in 2000, Sri Lanka managed to beat only China 28-27, while losing to both Thailand (28-38) and Singapore (12-15) to be placed just ahead of Thailand in the final placings. Commodore Mayadunne further said that Sri Lanka are also scheduled to play in the Dubai International 7's in February-March as well as the Hong Kong International 7's in March next year. |
