Yuga Dekma - an unqualified success The Yuga Dekma Industrial Exhibition, which was held in Trincomalee, was attended by over 700,000 people and provided a platform for national integration, linkage development and dialogue with communities from every socio-economic and regional segment, Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama told a media conference recently. Yuga Dekma comprised 240 stalls with 20 pavilions. "Through the event we were not only able to create awareness of our potential and resourcefulness, but also trigger enhanced foreign investments. People of the region were able to see something which they have not seen for the last 20 years," he said. A programme to rehabilitate rice mills was initiated last month with the assistance of the banking and private sectors to help farmers. A clean production system will be the theme of the new industrial culture and Yuga Dekma is the awareness programme towards this initiative. The Minister told the media that the next exhibition will be held in Matara on August 6, 2003. He stated that requests have been made by several ministers to have an intermediate exhibition either in Gampaha or Anuradhapura and a committee has been set up to study this proposal. The Matara exhibition will comprise 500 stalls with 25 pavilions. Action will be pursued to develop roadways between regions and towards this end, a 12-mile stretch is being developed in Nikawaratiya, Minister Bogollagama's electorate. He has been directed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to launch a programme for the rehabilitation of 200 rice mills for which the necessary machinery will be provided by the Industrial Development Board through a credit scheme to develop agriculture. |
