STC introduces new products to facilitate turnaround

The STC General Trading Company Ltd., the successor to the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation, will introduce new quality products at reasonable prices to the market as a means of turning around the operations of the company.

The STC, which was established in 1971, recorded a loss for the first time four years ago.

The losses have continued since, as the products which were imported did not cater to market requirements.

"The new Board that was appointed in January is now trying to cut down losses and make this a profitable venture again. Introducing viable products and removing products which are not in demand is one of the measures taken in this regard," STC Chairman Yasendra de Silva told a news conference recently.

Gentra flat screen colour televisions and Hero Stream motor cycles were launched last week by STC as the first step in this direction.

The televisions, manufactured by TWD Asia Ltd., Hong Kong, are equipped with AV stereo and channel memory and comes with a one-year warranty. STC will later launch Gentra refrigerators, air-conditioners and washing-machines.

Hero motor cycles, manufactured by the Hero Company in India, will be available at all STC outlets and authorised dealers. The STC easy payment scheme, Big Buy, will be available for these motor cycles.

STC, the 100 per cent State-owned organisation, also markets agricultural, construction and hardware products, automotive products, chemicals and allied products, household, electronic and electrical goods and office supplies. It is now considering a joint venture operation with private sector participation to boost its in-house duty free shop and the proposed shop at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
